Conscious Evolution: From Vinyl to Recycled and Sustainable Fabrics

When we spoke with José Gancedo in our podcast “Espacios que hablan”, we talked about how materials have evolved within interior design—particularly textiles. Sustainability is no longer just a trend; it’s a necessity.

During the discussion, we explored how the perception of stain-resistant fabrics has changed, and how we’re gradually moving away from the use of vinyl. As Laura pointed out,
“We’ve moved away from using so much vinyl and started using fabrics instead, precisely because they’re now stain-resistant. Everything has evolved quite a bit, right?”
To which José responded clearly:
“It’s evolved enormously.”

This shift is not only due to technical improvements in materials, but also to increased environmental awareness. While PVC is recyclable, it poses a significant ecological impact if not handled properly.
“There’s a trend to reduce it as much as possible, because although it’s easy to recycle, its decomposition takes a very long time. If not recycled correctly, it ends up lingering in the environment far too long.”

At Tapicerías Gancedo S.A., they’ve embraced more sustainable fabric solutions for their projects. One of the most widely adopted alternatives is the use of textiles made from recycled polyester—primarily sourced from PET bottles. These fabrics not only reduce the need for new raw materials, but also come with additional features that make them ideal for high-performance uses, such as in the hospitality industry.

“What sets us apart is that we add a flame-retardant treatment so that the fabrics can also meet hotel requirements,” Gancedo explained. These types of technical considerations are crucial when choosing the right materials, as they allow for a fusion of aesthetics, functionality, and environmental responsibility.

Additionally, when it comes to PVC, there’s an ongoing transition to alternative materials like polyurethane, which are less harmful to the environment.
“We’re replacing PVC with polyurethane, which is much more eco-friendly,” he stated, emphasizing their commitment to more conscious material choices.
