In the last episode of “Espacios que hablan,” the podcast by U Interior Design dedicated to hotel and hospitality interiors, we welcome José Gancedo, a prominent figure in the textile industry and co-owner of Gancedo S.A. upholstery. Throughout the episode, Laura Huerta, director of U Interior Design, and José discuss the evolution of textiles in hotel design, addressing challenges, lessons learned, and future trends.
From National Paradors to the Mexican Caribbean
From the earliest national Paradores in Spain to the most innovative resorts in the Caribbean, textiles have played a consistent role in the evolution of hotel interior design. Curtains, upholstery, cushions, rugs, and trimmings do more than just decorate: they evoke emotions, create identities, and enhance the guest experience.
In hotel projects, textiles hold immediate visual importance—they are the first elements noticed upon entering a room. Their colors, textures, and combinations with other materials determine perceptions of warmth, luxury, or freshness.
Gancedo’s beginnings in hospitality textiles trace back to the 1970s, notably with Spain’s national Paradores, characterized by baroque decoration and fabrics as central elements. Since then, the brand has continuously evolved, adapting to new trends, styles, and market demands.
A significant milestone in their international expansion was their entry into Mexico’s Riviera Maya over a decade ago, consolidating their presence in emerging markets and developing textile solutions for large-scale projects.
Weaving Sustainability
Textile design has undergone significant transformation in recent years, driven by a growing environmental consciousness. Many collections today use recycled materials, such as PET bottles, and processes that minimize environmental impact without compromising aesthetics or durability. Additionally, versatile “in & out” fabrics suitable for both indoor and outdoor use offer increased adaptability, especially in locations with extreme climates.
Technical fabrics have gained prominence: more resistant blackout materials, stain-resistant treatments, fire retardants, and digital printing allow total customization with minimal waste.
“I believe textile decoration in a room is among the first things you notice when you open the door. The colors and designs significantly influence the overall atmosphere,” says José.
Textile Trends: Natural Inspiration, Technical Fabrics, and Artisan Detail
During their conversation, José highlights three major trends shaping the future of hotel textiles:
- Natural inspiration: Recyclable fabrics and collections focused on sustainability, such as his collaboration with Mexican designer Nira Troice.
- In & Out fabrics: Designed for indoor and outdoor use, built to withstand harsh conditions without sacrificing style.
- Revival of trimmings: Small but significant details that add warmth and personality, including options suitable for outdoor use, preserving an artisanal tradition.
Innovation Serving Comfort
Designing textiles for hotels requires a constant balance between creativity and functionality. Unlike residential settings, the hospitality sector demands fabrics that withstand intensive use and variable conditions such as lighting or humidity. Domestic collections often serve as a starting point, adapted or reinvented to meet hospitality standards.
A major initiative from Gancedo has been technological investment aimed at enhancing durability and ease of maintenance. From washable, highly resistant blackout fabrics to stain-resistant textiles and recycled fibers, every design aims to simplify daily hotel operations without compromising style.
Technological innovation and collaboration between designers and manufacturers now enable the creation of custom-made fabrics meeting the most stringent technical requirements while preserving each project’s unique character.
José emphasizes the importance of collaboration with designers and interior studios: “I think decorators are the true trendsetters,” he jokes, highlighting the designers’ roles as co-creators of unique spaces—a constant dialogue resulting in personalized collections tailored to hospitality’s specific needs.
Design as Narrative
Gancedo doesn’t just manufacture textiles; it creates atmospheres, contexts, and experiences. Whether in luxury hotels, heritage projects, or collaborations with emerging talents, their commitment to quality, sustainability, and tradition positions them as a key player in contemporary hotel design.
What truly transforms a room isn’t always the prominent elements, but thoughtfully chosen textile touches that create identity without significant renovations. Ultimately, well-designed textiles don’t merely decorate: they tell stories, evoke emotions, and turn each stay into a unique experience.
