Sustainability and responsible design have become essential elements in the world of interior design. Nowadays, it is no longer enough for a product to be functional or aesthetically attractive, it is also required to have a minimal environmental impact. In the last episode of our podcast Espacios que Hablan, Jerónimo Maciá, founder of Alfombras Veo Veo, talked to us about this.
“Veo Veo Veo was born at the end of the 90s. Our intention from the beginning was to produce carpets as close as possible to our center, that is, kilometer 0”, Jerónimo told us during the interview. These words reflect a work philosophy ahead of its time, when the concept of sustainability was not yet relevant in the design industry.
At that time, handmade carpets were imported mainly from India, and later from China. Although this model was profitable from an economic perspective, it implied a high environmental cost due to the long transportation distances and the carbon footprint generated.
Local production as an act of courage
Faced with this reality, Alfombras Veo Veo decided to follow a different path: betting on proximity, artisanal manufacturing and respect for the environment. As Maciá mentions in the podcast: “it was very difficult to talk about proximity and sustainability in the 90s”. This statement shows the courage involved in making a decision that was neither popular nor simple at the time.
Beyond reducing environmental impact, local production has also allowed Alfombras Veo Veo to strengthen the economy of its immediate surroundings. By collaborating with local suppliers and artisans, employment is promoted, traditional know-how is protected and a final product with identity and quality is guaranteed.
A benchmark in sustainability
Today, sustainability is no longer an option, but a market requirement. Companies, design studios and consumers are increasingly aware of the impact of mass production and international transport. In this context, Alfombras Veo Veo has established itself as a true benchmark, having integrated from the beginning the values that today define responsible design.
The history of this company shows that innovation is not only about developing new aesthetics or technical solutions, but also about assuming ethical commitments regarding the origin of materials, manufacturing methods and forms of distribution.
The history of Alfombras Veo Veo reminds us that it is possible to do things differently. Recognizing those who decided to act in a coherent and responsible way before it became a trend is key to building a more conscious, ethical and sustainable design industry.
