The value of Ibiza Stone and the magic of design: A conversation at Casa Decor 2025

In the most recent episode of Espacios que Hablan, the You Interior Design podcast for hospitality‑and‑restaurant interior‑design lovers, we head to a very special location: Casa Decor 2025, celebrating its 60th anniversary.

From this iconic event, Laura Huerta, director of You Interior Design, talks with Álvaro Piña Serrano, commercial director of Suministros Ibiza, to explore the history of a company with hotel DNA and the technical and creative challenges of working with natural Ibiza stone. “Suministros Ibiza was founded 61 years ago to build hotels. Hotel DNA is more than in our blood,” Álvaro notes at the start of the episode.

Ibiza Stone Takes Center Stage

One highlight of the conversation is the detailed explanation of the artisanal process required for Ibiza stone. Unlike other ornamental stones, Ibiza Stone is not quarried in regular blocks but in irregular shapes, adding both technical and aesthetic challenges.

We extract what the sector calls ‘boulders’… large stones with a very irregular shape. They don’t come clean or ready to work like in a classic quarry.”

This method is slow and yields little material, yet the result is an authentic, local, and highly prized product. In the space designed by You Interior Design at Casa Decor, the stone comes alive in unusual forms: sweeping curves, single‑piece carved niches, and a fluted reception desk that posed a major technical challenge. The outcome is a warm, sophisticated environment that channels the essence of Ibiza and turns it into a tangible experience.

Sunset Biscuit: Innovation Born from Creativity

Another star of the episode is “Sunset Biscuit,” an innovative floor covering created exclusively for Casa Decor. With organic shapes and a carefully curated color palette, this flooring has attracted great interest from visitors. Álvaro admits that at first he didn’t see the potential of the individual pieces, but once he saw the finished installation he was amazed:

When you proposed it, I raised an eyebrow… but that’s the magic of interior designers. It looks spectacular,” he recalls with a laugh.

It’s a clear example of how an interior designer’s vision can transform raw materials into true works of art.

From Local to Global: Challenges and Ongoing Projects

Suministros Ibiza not only distributes materials; it also plays an active role in large‑scale projects. The company supports ventures nationally and internationally—from the Four Seasons in Formentor to projects in the Caribbean. As Álvaro puts it, “We’re more than used to delivering high‑level projects. We’ve been building hotels for 61 years, and not many people can say that.”

He also offers a preview of the upcoming renovation of the company’s showroom, which will feature several architecture and interior‑design studios—one of them You Interior Design. They reminisce about their first collaboration:

It was at the Bless Hotel. I’d just arrived on the island, with a huge renovation in seven months. It was the miracle of that year.”

Tips and Vision for Using Ibiza Stone

To wrap up, Álvaro shares three key tips for anyone looking to incorporate natural stone into their projects:

  1. Choose the right material for each use, especially in high‑traffic or wet areas. “There are some beautiful sandstones, but they aren’t suitable for lobbies. For pools, there are granitic quartzites that are perfect.”
  2. Balance technical requirements and aesthetics to merge functionality and beauty. “In areas like Ibiza, we don’t recommend black stones in showers because of lime buildup.”
  3. Seek expert advice, because natural stone is as diverse as nature itself and experience is crucial for the desired outcome. “We always try to advise so that the intended use isn’t at odds with the chosen stone.”

This episode not only reveals the technical and creative behind‑the‑scenes of an interior‑design project; it also celebrates collaboration, artisanal tradition, and innovation in every detail.
