Who Creates Trends? Fashion, Design, and Co-Creation in Interior Design

Talking about interior design trends means talking about a constant flow of ideas, references, and aesthetic evolution. But where do trends really come from? Who sets them? In one episode of “Espacios que hablan”, Laura Huerta posed this key question to our guest, José Gancedo, who has a strong background in textile decoration and has played a key role in positioning Gancedo as a reference brand for textiles in hotels and design spaces. His response was as honest as it was revealing.

“Tell us right now which three trends you think are starting to emerge in the sector today,” Laura asked. And José offered a very interesting perspective on the origin of trends:
“What a question coming from you! I think the ones who actually create trends are decorators and people involved in design. What we do is really help co-create with you.”

This perspective highlights something we at U Interior Design experience every day: trends are not imposed from a single source—they are built collaboratively, through practice and experimentation. Designers, interior decorators, manufacturers, and users all participate in this creative process, where functionality, beauty, and contemporary style converge.

José also pointed out how the fashion world directly influences interior design:
“At the core, we follow what fashion dictates. I’d say that decoration is somewhat a continuation of what you see in fashion—it eventually reaches the world, our homes, and ultimately, our hotels.”
And it’s true: the colors, materials, shapes, and styles we see on runways or in fashion editorials inevitably filter into the objects and environments that surround us.

What’s fascinating about this connection between fashion and interior design is how it adapts across different scales and spaces. What begins as a visual trend in a clothing collection can evolve into a color palette for textiles, a texture for curtains, or a pattern for wallpaper. That’s where the interior designer steps in: to select, reinterpret, and apply those references in a way that aligns with the project’s concept and identity.

At U Interior Design, we don’t chase trends—we interpret them through our own lens and integrate them according to the unique needs of each space. As José rightly said, we believe in co-creation, in that ongoing dialogue between those who design and those who help bring those ideas into the physical world.

Because in the end, the most lasting trends aren’t just the ones that look good—they’re the ones that resonate with the people and the spaces they inhabit.
